Montgomery is a fabulous, colorful, iridescent plant with awesome leggy growth. He's super easy to care for, and propagates very easily. He blooms little purple flowers as he ages if you keep him happy. We picture him with suspenders and a bow tie... Maybe he makes craft cocktails at an English pub? He has lots of common names - the inch plant, flowering inch plant, wandering Willie, Wandering dude, purple queen, or spiderwort. His historical name is Wandering Jew - but that name has some questionable history - so we choose not to use it. The name is associated with a apocryphal myth that has been used to justify Antisemitism for centuries.
The Wandering Jew is a mythical immortal man whose legend began to spread in Europe in the 13th century. The original legend concerns a Jew who taunted Jesus on the way to the Crucifixion and was then cursed to walk the earth until the Second Coming.
While we are certainly not favoring one religion or another here at DPD - We want to be sensitive to issues that could offend our very varied fans! We like Montgomery like he is, and he wants to put this scandalous past to bed.
